Broken Heart

Are you suffering from a broken heart? Who is s/he -- the person that slugged it to ya'? Many of us are unfortunately all-too-familiar with the pain of heartache. We commiserate. We want you to heal. The only way you're going to heal is to put yourself in the frame of mind that you can heal. You have to allow it to happen. But of course, this doesn't happen overnight.

Moving On

We think one of the best things to do when dealing with a broken heart is to acknowledge your pain, celebrate it and bury it. Prepare for changes to come after you've owned it. Have you had a no-holds-barred good cry yet? Well, you cannot move on until you've allowed yourself a day or night of hardcore wallowing. You'll never graduate to the next stage if you don't let your emotions out for a pity party. Even bad boy Joe Elliot of Def Leppard feels your pain:

"Oh I'm sorry but it's true
You're bringin' on the heartbreak
Takin' all the best of me
Oh can't you see?
You got the best of me
Whoah can't you see?"

-Bringin' on the Heartbreak, from High n' Dry, Mercury Records, 1981

So have it out. Do whatever it is that brings you the most comfort. Book a window of time to yourself. Take an entire weekend, or a week -- whatever you can get away with. Go shopping. Supplies you may need: kleenex, chocolate, vodka, sad Neil Young CD's or whatever works for you, musically; more comfort foods, cucumber slices (for your swollen eyes), journal (for your bad poetry) and little amenities--like for instance, if you're a girl, you may want some kind of fancy bubble bath or sea salt scrub. If you're of the male species, perhaps you'd like some video games or a dart board. It feels good to throw when you're broken hearted. Video games, books, puppies -- whatever it takes, do it. You've got to get yourself through with this broken heart.

Have you got yourself the right reading material to plod you through healing a broken heart? Thomas McKnight's Love Tactics is an excellent read for times when you are feeling heartbroken. Take his book with you into the bubble bath and pick up a few strategies to get through the trying time of pain and broken heart.

Once you've taken a little time to savor your sadness, you can move away from your aching heart. Warning. It won't happen overnight. But it will happen. We know that right now it may feel as if you will never be healed. You will. That's just your broken heart talking.
