Problems With Online Relationships

When it comes to online relationships, the biggest problems people face is dishonesty.

Making a Good Impression
Many people lie about themselves when they are in an online relationship. Most of the time, this is in an attempt to make themselves look better. They may have self-esteem issues, which is one reason some people turn to online relationships. (This is just one of the pitfalls with online relationships.) If the person has good intentions, he or she might fess up before your first "in person" meeting. Chances are, they are fibbing about their appearance or their job. These are little things that they hope can be forgiven.

Other Intentions
Although some lies are made with the best of intentions, a lot of predators choose online dating as a means of preying on victims. They try to earn your trust, then they get you to agree to an in-person meeting and hope you are too stupid to take any kind of safety precautions. For instance, you should agree to meet in a very public place, not at each other's home. And you shouldn't give your address or home phone number until you're absolutely sure that this person isn't questionable. In fact, a background check isn't out of line.

Finally, let someone know what your plans are. If possible, make it a double date. Or, have a friend "tail" you on your date. Make sure you keep a fully charged cell phone with you in case of an emergency too.

Safety is important when dating, but don't let it get in the way of having a good time. Just be mindful and you'll be fine.
